Fourth of July Celebration in Logan

This weekend we went up to the cabin and on Friday night.  We went to the Utah State University stadium and watched Ryan Shupe and the Rubberbands in concert.  The kids earlier in the day had agreed to soak in the 58°F Logan River for one minute in order to earn a concession at the concert/fireworks show.

Some of them did it.

On Saturday morning we all went to Bear Lake to meet up with Chad for a training swim.  It was beautiful and we both saw several large fish.  Even though we all smothered sun screen on each other, we all got sun burnt.  Except for Cathi who stayed under the sun tent the whole time.  I guess the only smart one.

We played night games on Saturday evening and had a lot of fun up at the cabin.

Hobo Spider we saw at the cabin.

Cathi's Bear Lake Marathon and the weekend at the cabin

This last weekend Jacob and Lucy went to youth conference up in Island Park while Cathi and the rest of us went up to the cabin and Mom ran her 108th marathon at Bear Lake.  We did a lot of playing.  I had a noodle light saber battle.  I was able to lure Oliver to the dark side so it was me and him against the Jedi group of Sam, Isaac and Jonas.  They were ruthless and tried to take me down like a pack of wolves, but Oliver had my back and we were semi-victorious!

Oliver and Mom enjoying the beauty of the cabin landscape.

Jonas in front of the huge rock wall in front of the cabin.

The boys prompt a Jedi Vs. Sith lightsaber battle.

They were ruthless but somehow I convinced Oliver to join the dark side and I had an ally!

Here I'm being overtaken by Master Sam while my apprentice Oliver attempts to save his Sith Father. Isaac, I guess is using the force to heal his eye that popped out during a recent lightsaber battle that he lost.
Final pose after conceding defeat.

Oliver runs with Mom at Bear Lake Marathon for mile 19

Mom nearing the finish line in Laketown.

Yeah Mom!

108th marathon complete!

Boys will be boys.

The muscular marvel Jonas!

It wouldn't be a cabin visit without a cold water challenge.  Go Sam!

Where's my $1  says Sam.

Oliver has no body fat, so this is tougher for him than the normal human.

I'm getting old

So I just had my 43rd birthday and already I'm exhibiting symptoms of Alzheimers disease.

Yesterday at 8:20pm I saw that there was a good chance of capturing a decent picture.  So I quickly drove to the end of the causeway at Antelope Island and took this picture with my fancy camera which I love!
On the way home I stopped at Walmart to get a replacement toaster for the one that died yesterday in our kitchen.

I made sure to tuck the camera case down in the protective darkness of the car on the floor and made sure all windows were up and all doors locked.  After a brief visit inside Walmart I came back out and within 5 feet of reaching my car noticed that the door was unlocked.  Probably sounding like Napolean Dynamite I said, "You're such an idiot!"  Then I noticed that the window was down! That's impossible!  Immediately went into tunnel vision mode.  I then had the impression that the window was smashed in, because that would explain why the window was "down" and the door unlocked.

I quickly got in and sat down in the drivers seat and tucked over to where I stashed the camera case. It was gone.  My blood was boiling.  I can't recall but I may have blurted a few four letter words as I was beginning to notice new things in my car:

  • A yellow paperback book on my dash
  • seat covers
  • Strange smells
Then I thought, what the heck, is this even my car?  I look over to the next car and realized I had entered the wrong car!  The window wasn't smashed in, it was just down and the driver left it down with the car unlocked.  What a doof.  Well really it was me that was the doof.

I quickly got out and as I was going over to my real car the window was up and the door locked. I realized I left my receipt on the mistaken car's drivers seat.  I was still running on adrenaline and noticed that a mother and daughter were staring at me and the mother quickly took the daughters hand as they passed by me in the parking lot. Maybe they saw my eyes were twice as big, or overheard some profanity?  I was so embarrassed.

I quickly got in, noticed my camera case was safely in its place as I drove off.  Took at least an hour to calm down.  Please someone poison me when behavior like this happens weekly.

Apparently I liked Perry Mason

Just got this birthday message from my Mom:

Happy birthday Gordon.  I was sitting here thinking about the day you were born and I remember watching Perry Mason at night time and that's when I had the first signs that our baby was coming you were born that early next morning and I can remember saying to the doctor is this all there is to it.  Obviously I had no idea of all that motherhood would require.  But I also had no idea of the blessings that it would bring me as well. I love you Gordon and I'm so proud of the strong and dedicated person that you are and that you give as an example to others.  Have a great day.  Love, Mom

Conference April 2015

This last Sunday Cathi and I had to give talks in Sacrament meeting.  She brought up the fact that she fell asleep a little and that I was amused and took video.  Yep I did:

Cathi gave a wonderful talk.  Here's mine:

Defenders of the Family Proclamation

By Bonnie L. Oscarson

Young Women General President

Marie M. Cardon

Northern Italy near the Alps

Austin: Trento Italy

WE ARE DAUGHTERS of our Heavenly Father, who loves us, and we love Him. WE WILL “STAND as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places” (Mosiah 18:9) as we strive to live the Young Women values, which are:
Faith • Divine Nature • Individual Worth • Knowledge • Choice and Accountability • Good Works • Integrity • and Virtue
WE BELIEVE as we come to accept and act upon these values, WE WILL BE PREPARED to strengthen home and family, make and keep sacred covenants, receive the ordinances of the temple, and enjoy the blessings of exaltation.

We are daughters of our HF who loves us and we love him.
I love that!  It isn’t “who loves us if…”  It’s unconditional.  When we ponder on our relationship with the Savior we should always remember that his love and concern for us isn’t dependent on anything.

However  perhaps our feelings towards the Savior need a greater examination.  We reciprocate our feelings about the saviour by our actions:

John 14:15 - If ye love me, keep my commandments.

We will STAND.

Yesterday, I asked Lucy to recite the YW theme for me.  After stumbling once she stopped, stood up and started over.

What does the word and action of “STAND” signify?  Testify and Defend.  You can really defend yourself sitting down.  What are we testifying of?

“STAND as witnesses of God at all times, in all things and in all places.”

So we’re witnessing not just part of the time, and in some things, nor just only at church or YWs.    ALL THE TIME.  IN ALL AREAS, and EVERYWHERE.

That’s the goal.

But that’s not all.  In order to do that successfully, there are certain values that need to be followed:

FAITH:
The first principle of the gospel as found in the First Article of Faith.  We cannot obtain any further light until we have built up sufficient faith.

  • Women who touches the hem of Jesus’ clothes.  (Matthew 9:20-22)
20 ¶And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with anissue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment:
21 For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.
22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.

DIVINE NATURE:
Moses 1:39 For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.

INDIVIDUAL WORTH
Leaves the 99 for the 1.  As children of God, every one is precious.  He doesn’t give up on anyone that hasn’t given up himself.

KNOWLEDGE:
D&C 131:6 It is impossible for a man to be saved in ignorance.
So that means we need to learn and gain knowledge. Not the knowledge given from the world, but that given of the spirit.
Moroni 10:5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.

  • Spirit world - teaching them, ordinances in temples.  Wouldn’t it just be easier to write them a free pass like he has done for little children who died before accountability?   No. and that leads into the next section....

CHOICE AND ACCOUNTABILITY:
Without a choice, we can’t be held accountable.  And after we’ve made a choice, we won’t be able to avoid the consequence.  For a good choice, the blessing cannot be withheld.

GOOD WORKS:
Of all the Christlike attributes, if you could wish for one to be part of your nature without effort, which would it be?
Immediately the natural man takes over in my mind: Ability to walk on water or even more awesome, ability to breathe underwater.  How pathetic.  When I think of a Christ-like attribute that has a much greater effect I think of one such as: Having Charity or Good Works.
Why does it seem so much more natural for women to have this character trait?  I’ll catch Cathi quit often writing a thank you note, or making a “sweet” card of encouragement, or making dinner or a treat for a neighbor.  I absolutely love this trait about her.  It’s endears me to her when she does things so naturally that I wouldn’t really consider.

It’s this Christ-like attribute of doing good things  that makes women have such a huge effect!
INTEGRITY:
Doing the same thing whether someone is watching or not.  Defining your values and living them all of the time.  How are we doing in this area?  Are we living our lives with integrity?  That’s something we should be asking ourselves every single day.

It’s not our job to ask someone else that, or judge someone who is not living with integrity.  It’s meant to be a personal thing.

VIRTUE:
The “Catch all” at the end.  Anything that is “good”.
President Faust April 2003 Conference, General Women’s Session: Many people do not fully understand the meaning of virtue. One commonly understood meaning is to be chaste or morally clean, but virtue in its fuller sense encompasses all traits of righteousness that help us form our character. An old sampler found in a museum in Newfoundland, stitched in 1813, reads: “Virtue is the chiefest beauty of the mind, the noblest ornament of humankind. Virtue is our safeguard and our guiding star that stirs up reason when our senses err.”

Thank you itunes and 5-hour energy for driving me to a better music service

If you're an itunes radio user, you'll notice every 30 minutes or so you'll get this annoying advertisement from 5-hour energy:

Imagine listening to that about a dozen times a day every day.  You'd think itunes would be smart about not annoying their customers.  After several weeks (probably months) of listening to this crap, I've turned to paying the $99/yr to be an Amazon Prime Music user which makes it so I can listen to all sorts of genres without ads, but can download them for free if I like them.

Pretty awesome!  And no more 5-hour energy ads!

"It's 8 am and you didn't sleep great, so you need a 5-hour with a new improved taste.  Like Berry, Orange, Pomegranate and Grape.  Citrus, Lime even Pink Lemonade.
Have you tried 5-hour energy lately?
Have you tried 5-hour energy lately?
Oh If you need extra time, we've got extra strength. Flavors like Sour Apple, savory today.
Have you tried 5-hour energy lately?
Have you tried 5-hour energy lately?
It's got a new improved taste and comes in 10 great flavors."

Major marketing fail when you drive your customers away with your lack of advertisement variety.

Newgy 2050 control box electronic requirements

So I wasn't able to power up the control box for the Newgy 2050 after being in storage for a few years.  I kept getting "Wrong Voltage. Check Transformer".

So I looked online to see if I could find the electrical requirements, and thought I read somewhere "12v 1.2a", and I even took it to radio shack and had the sales associate help me.  Everything we tried ended up with the same message on the control box.

So I sent it in and they said it powered right up and the transformer I sent in was too low.  My biggest complaint is that every electonic component I've used has the electrical requirements embedded into the housing of the unit.  Not so in this case.  Nothing.

I shouldn't have to go look on the web to find out what the proper voltage/amps should be!

So I go the requirement from the tech himself on the phone:

Requirement:  15 volts, 1.6 amps

What I found online he said was probably for the 2040 control box.  This is the 2050 control box requirement!

I just sent newgy an email saying that information really should be in the owners manual!  (http://www.newgy.com/Download/Newgy_Robo_Pong_1050_2050_Manual.pdf)
