My Presidential Voting History

Someday when I'm old and in a wheelchair I may look back on my life and my role in the history books and the events of the times, so I'm adding it here with a few thoughts:

I turned 18 on May 26, 1990, which made me eligible to vote for the following presidential elections:

YearCandidate I voted forWho won
1992I was on my mission
but would have
voted for George H. Bush
Bill Clinton
1996Bob DoleBill Clinton
2000George W. BushGeorge W. Bush
2004John KerryGeorge W. Bush
2008Barack ObamaBarack Obama
2012Gary JohnsonBarack Obama
2016Evan McMullinDonald Trump
2020Jo JorgensenJoe Biden
2024Chase OliverDonald Trump

Some of my reasoning:

2024
I prefer a smaller government and really dislike the two party system, so I voted for Chase Oliver.  I was really planning on voting for Robert Kennedy, but he dropped out a few months prior and backed Donald Trump.  I was very disappointed as I was planning on him.   Hopefully his experience on the Trump team launches him as a candidate for 2028.
Despite my vote, I realized that Donald Trump is someone I would actually be fine with. He's a conceited, vain man, but he has some good policies and some promises to strengthen the economy, which Joe Biden kind of neglected, in my opinion. I was very much against Kamala Harris and was relieved to see Donald Trump win it so convincingly.

2020
Donald Trump vs. Joe Biden - Personally, I'm better off than I was in 2016, even with the Covid-19 Pandemic.  How much of that can really be attributed directly to the president. I doubt very much at all.  The last 4 years, the democrats have been putting their efforts into fighting the President more than focussing on the job of Congress and working for the people.

At the same time, President Trump's Twitter posts have really ignited a fire with the democrats with his ridiculous monologuing. And what turned the corner for me in this vote was the first debate.  I honestly have been happy with his policies and his direction in the country despite his extremely childish behavior on twitter, interviews with the media, and his unwillingness to humble himself and "Love your enemies and do good to them that hate you".  He too, like Obama is overly self aggrandizing which makes me sick.  Donald claims he's very intelligent. I would argue otherwise.  Being aware of the perceptions of the base constituent would require him to realize he needs to tone it down and not be so proud of himself, nor defamatory of his political enemies and of the media.  Because of his terrible performance in the first debate, that actually caused me to withdraw my vote for him and go with my original hopeful, Jo Jorgensen.

Jo Jorgensen in a nutshell is anti-big government.  She believes the federal government has gotten too big, too greedy, and forcing dependence on them.  Amen!  When I think about liberty and really a lot of the things that Ronald Reagan stood for, is what Jo stands for.

Here is a good interview Ben Shapiro did with Jo Jorgensen.

2016
Donald Trump vs. Hillary Clinton - Donald Trump was running his campaign with a lot of racial and extremist comments, and Hillary was under investigation by the FBI for her handling of classified email being sent/received on a private server. Not to mention her handling of Benghazi.

Then Donald Trump a month before the election had a video leaked of him saying some very disturbing statements bragging about his sexual abusing women. Definitely had to stay with my independent vote.

Gary Johnson came across as a moron, so I went with Evan McMullin which actually did very well in Davis County. He actually came in second place behind Donald Trump in Davis County, UT. With Hillary taking third place. But ultimately Donald Trump won Utah, and Hillary took second for Utah.

I was unable to convince Cathi to join me in my vote.  My second oldest son Jacob had influenced her to pinch her nose and vote trump which she did.

2012
At this point I realized that the two party system is greatly flawed as I noticed that our government was resembling two big kids in a playground chest bumping for power rather than protecting the little kids (their constituents). So I realized that my independent vote would mean little, but at this point, I was voting on principle. Despite the fact that I really liked Mitt Romney much better than Gary Johnson.  Didn't know squat about Gary Johnson (which I realize was bad that I voted for him), but I was so angry at the two party system that I didn't care.

2008
I actually voted for (and contributed $25) to Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primaries. Still angry with President Bush re: Iraq, at this point in time I associated with the Democratic party.

2004
I was extremely upset with George Bush over the Iraq invasion. The "Weapons of Mass Destruction" was not the case, and I was very angry about him going to war over something that was completely false.

1996
Bill Clinton with his Monica Lewinski scandal, made him the worst possible president in my eyes. Video of his denial, and eventual admission.
